Exploring Flow and Emergence in Uncertain Times - Peter's thoughts
Wherever I look, I see horrible thinking and toxic behaviour. Some people believe they are better than others. I wonder what the future might be for our children and grandchildren.
I might think the upheaval and violence doesn’t affect me or my immediate family, but it does. We are all drinking from the same pond. The privileged and powerful might be more comfortable now, but life will have its way. Throughout history, extreme gaps in wealth and income have been unsustainable and there has been a leveling.
Yet, still, "How do you pack when you have no idea where you are going?" — Nora Bateson
I am moved by the Hopi Indian prophecy, featured in Margaret Wheatley’s more recent work. A brief paraphrase:
There is a raging river and most of us are scared and desperately clinging to the banks. But there is no hope at the shore as the banks are being dashed away by the river. Those who are brave enough will launch together into the mainstream. We will be frightened but trusting that the river (life) will carry us because it knows its way.

Just as a forest knows how to be a forest and our bodies know how to grow and maintain themselves, perhaps the hope for us as humans is in communing and community—in supporting each other to pursue what is right and good together, despite double binds, despite threats, intimidation and other social pressures that take away our dignity and freedom.
The Power of Flow in Community - Nicola's thoughts
Finding flow has never been easy for me. At times, it’s felt elusive, and I’ve struggled to catch it. But over time, I’ve learned that flow doesn’t come when you force it. It often emerges when we let go of rigid expectations and allow ourselves to be moved by the energy around us and within us.
Just like the river in the Hopi prophecy, flow in community doesn’t require us to have it all figured out. It’s not about controlling every step or making sure everything is perfect. It’s about trusting the process, connecting with each other, and allowing the community to shape the way forward. When we tune into the energy of the group, we are more likely to find collective flow—a state where the sum of our individual contributions becomes greater than the whole.

In this fortnight's Possibility in Practice sessions, we will explore flow and emergence not just as an individual experience, but as something that we can nurture together. We sense what the community is ready for, what it’s asking for, and how we can move in harmony with the wider living system. By tapping into our collective wisdom and being open to the unexpected, we create the conditions for something new and meaningful to emerge. This is the essence of flow in community—an unfolding process where we support each other, and in doing so, we allow something greater to guide us.
That’s our hope for the Possibility in Practice community.
Join Us for Our Next Session on FLOW and EMERGENCE
We’d love for you to join us as we dive deeper into these themes. We’re opening the space for reflection, conversation, and connection, where we can explore what flow looks like for us as individuals and as a collective.
This isn’t just about the work we do—this is about the way we show up for each other in the world and how we contribute to creating something meaningful together.
We hope you can join us.
